Pacific Pawprints—October 12, 2010

Dear Pacific Parents and Guardians,
Pacific strives to provide a safe and secure environment for all students. We know that our immediate community and our world have changed and that we must be prepared to address a variety of emergencies. As a school team, we want to be prepared to address emergencies before they occur and to provide better responses in the event of an emergency. Pacific School has a wonderful partnership with Manhattan Beach Fire and Police Departments and they share their expertise with us. As a school community, on a monthly basis, we practice fire, earthquake, or lockdown drills so that students and staff are well prepared for a true emergency.
Pacific School will be participating in the “2010 Great California Shake Out”. This event will occur statewide on October 21st at 10:21 a.m. and all Panthers will be instructed to “Drop, Cover and Hold on”. The entire community will then evacuate quickly, yet safely, to the upper field.
Elementary schools within MBUSD are also fortunate to have the ongoing support of a Manhattan Beach Police Department School Resource Officer. Officer Claudia McShane advises us on safety, creating secure environments and staff training. Working together creates better responses for our students. If you child mentions that he/she saw a police officer at school, please discuss Officer McShane’s role at Pacific. Please review these important reminders with your Panthers so we may maintain a safe community:
~ Walk or wheel to and from school with a reliable buddy or adult.
~ Third through fifth graders, may ride their bikes, with parent permission. Every child must wear a helmet and lock his/her bike in the bike rack behind the school office. Pacific School is not responsible for missing or stolen bikes.
~ Use the crosswalks every time you cross the street. Students, please be logical and do not dart in between parked or moving cars.
~ Parents/guardians please do not park in the designated handicapped parking areas on Pacific and near “The Zone”. These areas have been reserved for the students and/or parents that need them. We have students who receive transportation to/from school and their bus must load/unload in the handicapped parking area. Additionally, please do not park in the red curb areas surrounding Pacific School. Thanks in advance for your support.
Finally, the traditional Halloween Parade at Pacific will be held on October 29th at 8:30 a.m. on the upper field. This school-wide community event is fun for all grades across our campus. Given the size of Pacific School (over 650 students) the event typically lasts sixty minutes. Please plan your time accordingly. Last year costumes ranged from cartoon characters to sports figures to famous historical people. Please follow these very important guidelines for the safety and fun of all students:
~Costumes should reflect elementary school themes and should be in good taste.
~Costumes should not depict any kind of violence.
~ No masks, weapons/sharp objects or blood/gore.
~Shoes should be safe and comfortable.
Have a wonderful, sunny week! Thanks for your ongoing support of Pacific School.

MBEF - One Child. One Chance (Did You Know #1?)
MBUSD ranks number #3 in the state (up from #5), only behind San Marino and La Canada. Thank you for supporting MBEF. It is an investment in your children and your community. We can not rely on the state for proper funding. Your investment helps us take control from the state in building a school district that our children deserve. With your support, we can maintain a school district with stability and continuity. This year MBEF will pay for 66 educators to help maintain our excellent schools. Support the Annual Appeal. $1250 per student. Give every child every chance at www.mbef.org
In our elementary schools, MBEF pays for:
- one in every 5 teachers
- Small class sizes
- Computer Specialists
- Reading Specialists
- Library Specialists
- Science Specialists
- Instrumental music teachers
- Choral music teachers
- Curriculum specialist
